The Haryana Government has taken up a project under the Economic Stimulus Package to provide 100 per cent coverage of water supply and sewerage facilities in 14 towns, an official spokesman said here on Monday.

The towns are Ambala City, Assandh, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Fatehabad, Hansi, Kalayat, Kaithal, Mahendergarh, Narnaul, Sirsa, Ellenabad, Tohana and Uchana......

Reminding the obligations of a welfare state, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the Delhi Chief Secretary to convene a meeting of the various agencies concerned to chalk out a plan to ensure adequate and safe drinking water supply in the Capital.

The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology IICT, Hyderabad, has commissioned a defluoridation unit for groundwater in the fluorosis-affected Rachakonda tribal habitat and Marlapadu village, Nalgonda district, Andhra Pradesh.

The project was funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The technology for the unit was designed and developed by the scientists of chemical engineering division of IICT, according to a release......

The groundwater in a number of parts in Erode district is contaminated heavily due to indiscriminate discharge of untreated effluents by the textile and leather processing units.

A majority of the residents in the district depend on the groundwater as the local bodies are not able to meet the demand. The increasing levels of pollution in the groundwater pose serious threat to the health of thousands of people. Collector V. Arun Roy has instructed officials to take immediate steps to provide protected drinking water to the refugees at the Pampar camp within a month. The Collector also heard the grievances of the refugees and inspected a well near the camp during his recent visit.

The people at the camp said that they were finding it very difficult to get protected drinking water for a long time. A bore well dug up to 700 feet depth had gone waste......
